El Dorado County, California's Bridges: Mosquito Road Bridge across the South Fork of the American River (1)

Continuing east along the South Fork of the American River we came to the Mosquito Road Bridge. Mosquito Road gets a lot of traffic (over 1200 vehicles a day) for a single lane switchback going through the mountains. While photographing the bridge, I had to constantly move aside for all the SUVs and pickups waiting to cross. In fact there's a sign warning people not to loiter on the bridge.

Stone towers were built into the hillsides and suspension cables were draped over them and anchored into the ground. Steel rods hang from the cables and are attached to timber floor beams that support the deck. We'll take a closer look at this interesting bridge tomorrow.
