Sacramento County, California Bridges: Fair Oaks Bridge across the American River

September 2013 (38.6363 Degrees, -121.26511 Degrees) Fair Oaks Bridge
Continuing along the American River to the Fair Oaks Bridge that I last posted in October 2009. This bridge is another of the Pennsylvania Petit truss bridges that we've seen around Sacramento County. It has also been converted into a foot and bicycle bridge. It's interesting that these types of bridges were unable to handle the transition to automobile traffic.
In the photo above we can see how they built a special approach structure that allows bicyclists to climb up a ramp, over the bike trail (on the approach structure), and over the river on the truss bridge. It looks like they drove corrugated steel piles into the ground and cast a concrete slab on top for the approach structure.
Of course this bridge has the steel railing that is apparently ubiquitous on footbridges in California.
