Tokyo Japan's Bridges: Goshiki Zakura Big Bridge across the Arakawa (2)

March 2012 (35.765 Degrees, 139.760) Goshiki Zakura Ohashi
Another view of the Goshiki Zakura Big Bridge. The approach spans are supported by unusually-shaped bents. This bridge was opened in December of 2002 and received the Tanaka Prize by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers. The bridge was outfitted with ceramic piezoelectric elements in 2007 to create energy from the vibrations of passing vehicles. The resulting electricity is used to light the bridge at night.
