August 1999 (34.1138 Degrees, -118.2654 Degrees) Los Angeles River Bridges |
I continued walking another couple hundred yards down the Los Angeles River to the Glendale and Hyperion Bridges. The Hyperion Bridge (53 1081) is a much longer and taller structure and it's also a memorial to the soldiers who fought in World War 1. The Glendale Bridge (53 1883) sits on each side of the Hyperion Bridge. Both bridges have the same arched/haunched girder superstructure over the river, they share the same piers walls over the river, and they were both built in 1929. The Hyperion Bridge continues on the west aide of the river with a handsome arch spans over I-5 and Riverside Drive. The Glendale Bridge has T girder spans over I-5 but doesn't cross over Riverside Drive. We'll take another look at these bridges tomorrow.
