Santa Cruz County, California Bridges: State Route 9 Bridge across the San Lorenzo River

March 2014 (37.06861-122.08306) San Lorenzo River Bridge
The next bridge across the San Lorenzo River is another open spandrel arch. It's composed of a 135 ft arch main span and T girder approach spans. It carries State Route 9 (Br. #36 0046) and it was built in 1927. All of the arch bridges over the San Lorenzo River have very flat segmental arch shapes. What's odd about this bridge is that it looks like it's been retrofitted with steel casings at the ends of the arch ribs. However, I've never seen a seismic retrofit like that before. Also the rectangular columns supporting the approach spans have circular casings.
