This week's bridge crosses over the Middle Fork of the Feather River. The water level is so low now that the bridge looks like it did when it was first built. It's a suspension bridge, which is one of the easier long span bridges to build. Once you drape the cables over the towers (and anchor them) you can just work from each end hanging the superstructure until they meet in the middle.<br />

<a href="http://archives.csuchico.edu/cdm/search/searchterm/Oroville/mode/all/">Chico State University</a> has archived many photos that were taken during construction of the bridge and the dam. It's surprising how many long span bridges were designed and built during the period when the dams were being constructed. Sepulveda Dam was completed by the USACE in 1941, Shasta Dam was built by the USBR in 1945, Oroville Dam was built by the CDWR in 1965, etc. Who were all these bridge engineers? There seems to be a boom period for different places when money is available and amazing infrastructure is created.<br />

This week's bridge has several names. It's called the Bidwell Bar Bridge because it replaced an old bridge by that name that we'll look at next week. It's called the Lake Oroville Bridge because its the most impressive of the bridges over Lake Oroville. Caltrans calls it the Middle Fork of the Feather River Bridge (12 0188) after the obstacle that it crosses. It carries the Olive Highway, which is also called the Oroville-Quincy Highway and it's officially called California Route 162.<br />

The main span is 1108 ft long and the entire bridge is 1793 ft long. The roadway is 28 ft wide with sidewalks on both sides of the roadway. It's an interesting bridge because it is on a horizontal curve with the suspension cables anchored to the side of the deck. Note how there are no back stays on the bridge. Instead, there are concrete piers to support the back spans on both ends of the bridge. <a href="http://highestbridges.com/wiki/index.php?title=Bidwell_Bar_Bridge">Eric Sakowski writes</a> that it's the highest reservoir bridge in the US. The towers are 350 ft tall and were built about 300 ft above the bottom of the river.<br />

Every river flowing out of the Sierras (except for the Smith River near California's northern border) is dammed at least once before it reaches the valley. The Oroville Dam was completed in 1968 and filled the branches of the Feather River with Lake Oroville. Long, tall bridges were needed to cross these swollen river branches.<br />

Last week we looked at the West Branch of the Feather River Bridge. In today's blog we've moved to the southeast side of Lake Oroville to look at the Enterprise Bridge across the South Fork of the Feather River. The Enterprise Bridge (12C0199) is a 1175 ft long continuous three span deck truss bridge that was built in 1967. As can be seen in the photos, California's drought has reduced the South Fork to a trickle.<br />

These continuous truss bridges were popular for medium long spans in the 1960's. However, I doubt if they would be built today. All of the bridges with spans between 400 to 1000 ft in length that have been built recently in California have either been concrete arches (like at <a href="http://www.bphod.com/2014/07/san-mateo-county-california-bridges_15.html">Devil's Slide</a>) or segmentally constructed concrete box girder bridges (like the new <a href="http://www.bphod.com/2014/02/solano-county-california-bridges_13.html">Benicia Martinez Bridge</a>). California hasn't even built a long span steel girder bridge let alone a steel truss in many years.</div>

The Sacramento is the largest river in California and the Feather River is its principal tributary. We previously visited bridges on the <a href="http://www.bphod.com/2013/10/yuba-county-california-bridges-simpson.html">Feather River in Yuba County</a>. However, the really big bridges are across the branches higher up in the Sierras.<br />

The first bridge we visited is the State Route 70 Bridge across the West Branch of the Feather River (12 0134). It's a double deck truss bridge that carries the highway on the top deck and the Southern Pacific Railroad on the lower deck.<br />

This bridge is composed on four, 576 ft long Warren truss spans for a 2730 ft total length (with the approach spans). The always reliable <a href="http://www.highestbridges.com/wiki/index.php?title=West_Branch_Feather_River_Bridge">Eric Sakowski</a> states, <i>"<span style="background-color: white; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.6999998092651px; line-height: 19.0499992370605px;">The second highest double decker road and rail bridge in the world after the Pit River Bridge, the West Branch Feather River cantilever bridge is one of 4 high spans that cross Lake Oroville in Northern California. The creation of America’s deepest man-made lake started in the early 1960s when construction began on the Oroville Dam. Completed in 1968, the earth fill structure is the highest in the United States measuring 770 feet (235 meters) from base to crest."</span></i><br />

After posting thousands of pictures of bridges it's not surprising that I occasionally receive emails with corrections to my blog. In 2010 I showed <a href="http://www.bphod.com/2010/01/puente-bolivar.html">a bridge in Arequipa, Peru</a> which I incorrectly identified as by Gustav Eiffel. However, if I had studied the bridge more carefully, I would have realized it was supported by columns manufactured by the Phoenix Bridge Company. It wasn't until I received an email from Jeff Amerine with the Schuylkill River Heritage Center in Phoenixville, PA that I realized my error. Apparently the Phoenix Bridge Company had been very active in providing bridges to South America.<br />

The Phoenix Bridge Company built over 500 bridges with their patented hollow column design. Just like Sears Roebucks, they published a catalog where buyers could chose one of their <a href="http://www.memory.loc.gov/service/gdc/scd0001/2010/20100317001al/20100317001al.pdf">standard bridge designs</a> (although some additional engineering was usually required). The columns were lightweight but strong and were an improvement over the cast iron columns that had previously been used for truss bridges. However, as the American Bridge Company (and reinforced concrete bridges) became more successful the Phoenix Bridge Company became less able compete and they eventually went out of business.<br />

It's often beneficial to connect islands, countries, or even continents together. We've previously studied how Japan connected its <a href="http://www.bphod.com/2009/07/tatara-bridge-2.html">four main islands together at the end of the twentieth century</a>. Similarly, Italy would like to connect their mainland across the 3.1 km wide Strait of Messina to the island of Sicily. Projects to bridge the Strait have been proposed throughout history, but the canyon-like bathymetry of Messina would require a main span of 3 km, which is one and a half times greater than the main span of the world's longest bridge (the <a href="http://www.bphod.com/2009/07/akashi-kaikyo-bridge-2.html">Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge</a> in Japan). The latest project to bridge the Strait was proposed by Silvio Berlusconi in 2009 before it was abandoned again in 2013.<br />

A more ambitious project would be to cross the 80 km wide Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia. Such a project would present a variety of challenges due to the weather, the politics, the expense, etc. However, the Strait is only about 55 meters deep and has the Diomede Islands to provide a respite between two really long bridges. Currently Russian is proposing to built a $65 billion rail tunnel across the Strait. Such a connection might help warm relations between the US and Russia.<br />

An even more ambitious project is a space bridge from the earth's equator to a synchronously orbiting satellite 36,000 km above the earth. The bridge would be built of lightweight carbon filaments under tension. The lower end would be pulled downward by gravity and the upper end would be pulled upward by centrifugal force. The most popular fantasy after 'bridges with buildings' in 'Unbuilt America,' (by Sly and Stone) are 'bridges with pipes.' If a building bridge represents the fantasy of watching travellers from the comfort of home than a pipe bridge represents the fantasy of travel through the birth canal. In the drawing above (from 'Design and the Environment' by Phyllis Kirby) a 'Pipeline for Autos,' from 1963 shows how vehicular protection can be provided in a cold and windy environment. It's an above ground tunnel composed of a cylindrical superstructure with piers and occasional towers for the substructure.<br />

A variation on this theme is the 'Future Cities' by James Rossant (1973). In the above drawing his city resembles an organism with it's epidermis removed and it's circulatory system exposed. Bridges are just one of various pipelines carrying its circulatory systems through a city like an exposed anthill. The idea of communal living with minimal environmental degradation was a popular idea in Paolo Soleri's Arcosanti or in a megapolis like New York or Tokyo. The idea seems comforting, at least from this view high above the people's struggles.<br />

Speaking of Soleri, almost all of his bridges are either tubular like the drawing above or partially exposed tubes like the Beast bridge we recently studied. The book 'Unbuilt America' by Allison Sky and Melissa Stone illustrates a variety of futuristic fantasies for the United States. A recurring image is a building combined with a bridge. In the past, the wealthiest merchants build their businesses on bridges. However, I don't know if the same strategy would work today. When Louis Mullgardt visited San Francisco in the 1920s everyone was debating whether to build a bridge across the Bay. Mullgardt's unsolicited proposal (shown above) included giant buildings for the piers and a 24 lane bridge deck across the Bay. His expert use of charcoal made this futuristic study look more like a renaissance drawing.<br />

In Hugh Ferriss' drawing above (from 1929) apartment buildings were combined with a suspension bridge. Maybe it's the juxtaposition of a building facade on a bridge that causes a slight frisson of confusion and recognition.<br />

If a suspension bridge can support buildings so can a truss bridge. The Big Four Bridge was a railroad bridge that was built in 1893 across the Ohio River between Louisville, Kentucky and Jeffersonville, Indiana. When the railroads abandoned the bridge several entrepreneurs suggested converting it into a mini-city with apartment buildings, restaurants, etc.. The composite photo/drawing by Arthur Foran in 1968 shows how he imagined it might look. However, the director of housing and building inspections eventually had the approaches removed as an eyesore. My sister sent me an article from <a href="http://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/could-wind-turbine-be-coming-bridge-near-you-180955854/?no-ist">Smithsonian Magazine</a> about installing wind turbines on bridges to create electricity. In the drawing above, mechanical engineer Oscar Soto imagines how turbines could be installed on the Juncal Viaduct in the Canary Islands. He said that any place with wind speeds between 6 and 25 meters per second would work.<br />

I imagine that bridges spanning mountain canyons <a href="http://www.bphod.com/2009/11/viaduct-beltran-3.html">like we saw in Mexico</a> would have sufficient clearance for a wind turbine. Visionary artists often come up with bridge designs to illustrate their ideas and/or philosophies. Sometimes their bridges are built during their lifetimes, or after they're gone, but usually they remain tantalizing ideas that only exist in books. The <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/163889/paolo-soleris-bridge-design-collection-connecting-metaphor">architect Paolo Soleri</a> believed that humans were migratory creatures and wanted to design high density cities (to minimize their impact on the environment) where they could stop between their travels. He built Arcosanti in the Sonoran Desert to test his ideas. His 'Beast' bridge (shown above) was designed to help carry his imagined tribal societies on their journey. It's a continuous concrete structure with the superstructure folded upward at midspan and folded downward at the supports. It actually looks a lot like Frank Lloyd Wright's 'Butterfly' bridge, which isn't surprising since they worked together at Taliesen in the 1940s. Most likely, they influenced each others designs. This bridge was in '<a href="http://happypontist.blogspot.com/2015/06/10-essential-bridges-books-3.html">The Architecture of Bridges</a>," a book that The Happy Pontist rated highly in a blog last week.<br />

Buckminster Fuller developed a philosophy of tensegrity with structures composed of prestressed tension cables (on the outside) and isolated compression struts (in the middle). These truss-like structures are composed of elements loaded axially without any bending, shear, or torsion. Although a tensegrity bridge was never built in Buckminster Fuller's lifetime, the Kurilpa Bridge in Brisbane, Australia is said to have been designed (by Cox Rayner Architects and Ove Arup Engineers) using tensegrity principles.<br />

Frank Gehry's structures are easily identifiable because of their undulating stainless steel surfaces. The BP (Millennium Park) Pedestrian Bridge in Chicago is a long steel box girder bridge (designed by SOM) that supports Frank Gehry's design. To help in the design and construction of his structures, Gehry's uses Grasshopper programming software, which is good at creating intricately folded surfaces. If you are a famous architect, most cities are happy to own your bridge (although even Gehry had to go through many iterations before his design was finally accepted).<br />

I was reading a book, "AAD - Algorithm-Aided Design" by Arturo Tedeschi and on the last page was a computer generated drawing for a 'Cloud Bridge.' This picture reminded me of the many other lovely bridge designs that were never built because they were too whimsical or too expensive.<br />

For instance, the Ruck-A-Chucky Bridge was designed by TY Lin when he was working at Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill. It was to go across the Middle Fork of the American River (in California) when the state was planning to built the Auburn Dam in the 1970s. Because the bridge was to be built in a steep canyon, it was thought that a curved superstructure hanging from cables anchored into the rocks above would be an economical alternative with the least environmental impact to the area. When it was decided not to build the dam, they also decided to abandon the bridge project.<br />

Similarly, Frank Lloyd Wright had been interested in designing a bay crossing between the San Francisco to Oakland Bay Bridge and the San Mateo to Hayward Bay Bridge. His first drawings were made in 1949. The design had an sinuous, organic shape with 2000 ft long arch spans supporting a garden in the middle of the Bay. It was called the 'Butterfly Bridge,' perhaps because it resembled the flight of a butterfly. Several attempts were made to finance this 'Southern Crossing' but the state of California eventually rejected the idea as being too costly.<br />

There are many other designs for bridges that were never built because they were perceived to be impractical for some reason. It seems like if you have a nice hand for drawing landscapes or for doing 3D computer graphics you can create something intriguing, but it requires something more to get your design built. There are a number of strange uses people put to bridges (other than crossing over a river). In the photo above Di Mainstone, a British artist, films <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/turning-bridges-into-music?mbid=nl_072815Daily_Photo&CNDID=26115011&spMailingID=7939484&spUserID=Mzg4MzA1MTk5NzYS1&spJobID=723716840&spReportId=NzIzNzE2ODQwS0">Georgina Hampton Wale</a> carrying a 'digibow' and electronic equipment to coax music out of the stays and suspension links of the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol England. Mainstone has continued her experiments on the Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge in Omaha, Nebraska and on the Tower Bridge in London. I was going to provide a recording of her 'bridge' music but I couldn't figure out how to attach an audio file to my webpage. <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jul/29/activists-hang-from-bridge-portland-block-shells-arctic-oil-vessel">The Guardian</a> had an article today about people hanging from the St John's Bridge over the Columbia River in Portland, Oregon to stop an ice cutter and other ships owned by Shell Oil from passing under the bridge on their way north to explore for oil in the Arctic. They are using the bridge to (hopefully) prevent global warming and environmental degradation of the Arctic.<br />

Putting locks on bridge rails has become a popular way for couples to declare their eternal love for each other. However, bridge owners have become concerned about the additional dead load on their bridges. The locks were particularly thick on the <a href="http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Europe/2015/0601/Why-Paris-is-removing-the-love-locks-from-Pont-des-Arts-bridge">Pont de Arts in Paris</a> and so the city eventually removed them.<br />

Even more dramatic is the desire to end one's life by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_bridge">jumping off a bridge</a>. I guess for some people, living becomes so intolerable that the thought of hurling themselves off a bridge deck (instead of making them terrified) makes them happy! In the photo of the Golden Gate Bridge above signs, counselors, and netting are all provided at considerable expense to try to prevent suicides. I previously wrote about a friend who worked the late night shift re-decking this bridge. I thought I'd discuss some interesting new bridges that were recently built (or soon to be built) in the Los Angeles Area. The <a href="http://la.streetsblog.org/2014/07/01/gold-line-foothill-extension-photo-tour-iconic-gold-line-freeway-bridge/">GoldLine Bridge (53 3068)</a> shown above was built in 2012 and carries LA Metro tracks across State Route 210 in the City of Arcadia. The bridge cost $18.6 million and was designed by the artist Andrew Leicester. He said he wanted to pay homage to the past by designing the outrigger bent to look like two Native American woven baskets. Beneath the decorations is a prestressed concrete box girder bridge.<br />

About 13 miles east of the GoldLine Bridge is the Los Angeles River beside Griffith Park, which is the site for the future <a href="http://la.curbed.com/archives/2011/10/atwater_village_to_get_iconic_bridge_across_the_la_river.php">North Atwater Park Equestrian Bridge</a>. It will be a 302 ft long cable stayed bridge designed by Buro Happold, along with Fuscoe Engineering, Leighton Engineering, construction consultants Gardiner and Assoc., and landscape architects Mia Lehrer (with Tetra Tech). The tower will be over 200 ft tall to remind drivers on the nearby I-5 Expressway that the river (with its many recreational possibilities) is nearby.<br />

Continuing east of the North Atwater Park Bridge is the Great Wall of Los Angeles, which shows the history of the area. Above the wall will be built the <a href="http://sparcinla.org/wp-content/uploads/downloads/GreenBridgeBooklet.pdf">Green (Valley College) Pedestrian Bridge</a> across Tujunga Wash that replaces a previous bridge at this site (that was removed last year). The new bridge is designed by Judy Baca, the Social and Public Art Research Center (SPARC), and wHY Architects. The bridge will be built out of recycled material (perhaps pulled out of the wash?) and lit by solar cells. Beneath the architectural features are steel plate girders supporting the deck and the roof.<br />

Last week a flash flood washed out the eastbound Tex Wash Bridge (56 0576L/R), which is one of two 3-span concrete slab bridges that carry I-10 across a desert wash near Desert Center, California. These bridges were built in 1967. Traffic was quickly diverted to the westbound bridge with one lane in each direction. A new eastbound bridge will be completed in September.<br />

The one irritating thing about this story was how the news media reported it. They all said that the bridge had an 'A' rating and so officials are investigating why it collapsed. The news likes to make every natural disaster sound like negligence on the part of engineers. Bridges are designed for the 100 year flood, which was obviously exceeded by this event.</div>

Since I haven't written in a while, I thought I'd take advantage of a recent field trip I made to the Buchanan Field Viaduct (28 0186) in Concord, California to write a new blog post. This structure was originally left and right bridges built in 1964 with a center and outside widening added in the 1990's. The bridge is on a high skew and so damage at the abutments was assumed to be a result of the tendency of skew bridges to rotate. However, when the environmental document for repairs went across our geologist's desk, she immediately recognized it as one of the fault crossings we were concerned about.<br />

Most of the damage was at the southeast corner where creeping of the Concord Fault is pushing the abutment against the superstructure. The fault moves at about 4 mm a year, and so after many years, the wing wall/shear key is being crushed. California has a number of the bridges where an abutment is slowly moving due to a nearby fault. The question is how much should be spent due to serviceability problems from the creep and due to the fault eventually rupturing during a future earthquake.<br />

The last highway bridge onto Terminal Island is the Vincent Thomas Bridge. It's a 6000 ft long suspension bridge with a 1500 ft long main span and 506 ft long side spans. It carries State Route 47 from San Pedro Island 195 ft above the Cerritos Channel to Terminal Island. It was constructed by John A. Roebling Sons and is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.<br />
<br />
As I previously mentioned, the bridge was the creation of the larger than life personality of (William) Jim Jurkovich. However, I don't know if Jim was prouder of this bridge or of playing halfback for the UC Bruins in the 1940s. Unlike the other Terminal Island Bridges, the Vincent Thomas Bridge got a seismic retrofit in the 1990s and should be good for another 50 years.<br />

The photo above was taken 16 years ago of the new (gray) Badger Street Lift Railroad Bridge next to the old (green) Schuyler Heim Lift Bridge. Today, a new Schuyler Heim Bridge is being built and will be completed by the end of 2016 (see photo below). The Ports were concerned that none of the bridges that carry vehicles on and off Terminal Island were designed to stay in service for the design earthquake. To address this concern, the new Schuyler Heim was allocated an additional 10% for an enhanced seismic design. Caltrans feels confident that all three bridges have a robust seismic design that should keep the highway bridges in service following a large earthquake. The two Ports handle 40% of the goods that move in and out of the U.S. so it's important to minimize disruptions to the transportation system. The Alameda Corridor allows trains to move from the Ports through Los Angeles without any at-grade crossings. Also, a new switching yard is being built next the Ports. With the new Schuyler Heim Bridge, truck traffic should also be able to move into and out of the Ports without disruptions.<br />

We last viewed the Gerald Desmond Bridge in my blog of <a href="http://www.bphod.com/2009/03/gerald-desmond-bridge.html">March 3rd, 2009</a>. It's a steel through truss arch bridge that was built in 1968 by the Port of Long Beach. They'd like to replace it with a taller bridge to allow bigger cargo ships to pass under it and into the Port.<br />

Originally, HNTB was designing the cable-stayed replacement bridge, but when it was almost done the State decided they could save money with a design/build contract, which was then awarded to Arup and Shimmick Construction. The proposed bridge is shown below.<br />

After passing under the Queensway Drive Bridges we leave the Los Angeles River and enter San Pedro Bay. The Bay is dominated by Terminal Island and the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The Ports rely on three bridges to move goods in and out of Terminal Island. The Vincent Thomas Bridge is a suspension bridge designed by Jim Jurkovich at Caltrans in the 1950s. The Schuyler Heim Bridge is an old lift bridge that is currently being replaced with a cast-in-place box girder bridge. The Gerald Desmond Bridge is a truss arch bridge that is being replaced with a cable-stayed bridge. We'll spend the next few days studying these bridges.<br />

We've finally reached our destination, the last bridges across the Los Angeles River at it's mouth in San Pedro Bay. The Queensway Drive Bridges (53C0551L/R) are a pair of three span steel box girder bridges that were built in 1969. The name comes from the Queen Mary, a famous cruise ship that is now a tourist attraction in the Bay (seen in the distance). The bridges are cantilever structures with a 1310 ft overall length and with a 500 ft main span length over the river.<br />

A few more miles and we've reached the City of Long Beach near the mouth of the Los Angeles River. Note the concrete lined channel is gone. At this location the river is more of a tidal estuary full of salt water creatures.<br />

The Ocean Blvd. Bridge (53C0927) is a 15 span steel girder bridge that was built in 1959. Sharing the same substructure are the Shoreline Drive Bridges (53C0892L); a pair of 10 span concrete box girder bridges built in 1967. These bridges cross a bikeway, a railway, several highways and the river. This is a very popular area with tourist sites and industrial sites all competing for the same real estate.<br />

About four miles south of the Artesia Blvd Bridge is the I-405 (San Diego) Freeway Bridges (53 1209) and a little south of that is a utility suspension bridge. The I-405 Bridges are eight-span steel girder bridges on very wide pier walls that were built in 1963 and retrofit in 1993.<br />

Just south of the I-710/I-91 Interchange is the Artesia Blvd. Bridge (53C0575). It's a twelve-span (726 ft long) concrete T-girder bridge that was built in 1949. It's also another bridge with haunched girders and big cutwaters across the Los Angeles River.<br />

Just downstream from the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge is an interchange that includes about eight bridges (N710 On-Ramp 53-2145S, Route 91 On-Ramp 53 2144K, S710-E91 Connector 53 2142F, etc.) across the Los Angeles River. Most of the bridges were built in 1971 and they're all steel girder or precast girder bridges.<br />
<br />
The I-710 (Long Beach) Freeway follows the Los Angeles River until it makes a bend at Vernon. The city of Los Angeles has been making plans to put the I-710 underground or do something to help speed it north to Glendale and Pasadena. Unfortunately, all of these ideas are very expensive and complicated by all the faults running through the Los Angeles Basin.<br />

Atlantic Boulevard continues south of downtown and crosses the Los Angeles River a second time in Compton. At this location it's a 15 span continuous T girder bridge that was built in 1937. The second Atlantic Blvd. Bridge (53C0185) looks almost new when compared to the photo below that was taken just after it was built (courtesy of the USC Library).<br />

Today, the bridge has enormous cutwaters on the upstream face and the river has become a concrete channel. However, even in the 1930's the river was very wide to handle all the water that accumulated as it traveled south.<br />

Like many other Los Angeles River bridges, the Alondra Blvd. Bridge (53C0031) was built in 1958 and widened in 1971. And like many of these bridges, it is a six span haunched girder T beam bridge on pier walls. It's funny how they were willing to cast a variable depth girder in the 1950s but not in the 1970s (like the Somerset Bridge just upstream). Perhaps the labor costs became so much higher that it acted as a disincentive to building more efficient bridges?<br />
