San Joaquin County, California Bridges: State Route 12 Bridge across the Mokelumne River

April 2014 (38.12667 Degrees-121.58000 Degrees) Mokelumne River Bridge
Continuing west on SR-12 we arrived at another Mokelumne River Bridge (29 0043). Like the other bridges that we've recently studied, this is a long (1436 ft) viaduct with a specially designed crossing over the middle of the channel. It was built in 1942 and widened in 1978.
In this case the viaduct is made from precast girders supported on pile extensions. Caltrans must have added girders and built a new swing span for the widening. The deck is now 27.9 ft wide and the swing span is 144 ft long with 15.6 ft of vertical clearance.
