Australia's Bridges: Goodwill Bridge across the Brisbane River in Queensland (1)

Despite the Goodwill Bridge's eccentric appearance, it is a very popular way for bicyclists and pedestrians to get across the river. The architect was Cox Rayner and the engineer was Ove Arup. It's composed of steel girders on two column bents on the north side of the river and a through arch on the south side of the river. The tied arch was put together downstream, carried by barge, and attached to the bridge. 


The bridge was completed in 2001 for the Goodwill Games. The north end is adjacent and perpendicular to the Captain Cook Bridges on a bend in the Brisbane River. During the floods, a restaurant floated downstream and hit the bridge without causing serious damage.
