Sacramento County, California Bridges: Wilton Road Bridge across the Cosumnes River

September 2013 (38.4170 Degrees, -121.2799 Degrees) Wilton Road Bridge
Our next bridge over the Cosumnes River is this three span T girder bridge that carries Wilton Road. I read that the Cosumnes is the onlyrivers out of the Western Sierra Nevada Mountains that isn't dammed (except for a couple of small diversionary dams near Rancho Murieta).

The Wilton Road Bridge is a three span T girder bridge on broad pier walls and end diaphragm abutments. This bridge was built in 1957 but there are timber piles sticking out of the riverbed suggesting an older bridge was once here. Also, there is a through girder railroad bridge sitting just upstream. It looks like the bridge owners have placed a lot of riprap around the bridge to prevent scour. I would imagine the river can get pretty nasty in the spring.
The bridge is 410 ft long because it includes a long slab approach structure on the northwest side of the river. This bridge is in the middle of nowhere but carries an amazing 11,000 vehicles a day (50 ft wide).
